“Kidnapped” prisoner handed over to Assam police

DIMAPUR, JUNE 9 (MExN): An accused, reportedly abducted from a jail in Dimapur on June 6, was handed to the Assam Police on June 8. Deepak Borah alias Pradeep, the accused, was taken to Kohima the day the alleged kidnapping incident occurred and produced at South Police Station by the person who had lodged a complaint against the accused in connection with a case of cheating, sources said.  The complainant after producing the accused at South PS had filed a complaint against the latter but it was not officially registered pending verification of facts, it was added. 

Borah was later handed over to Dimapur Police on June 8, which in turn handed him over to the Assam Police at Khatkhati, Karbi-Anglong the same day. Borah was in judicial custody, following his arrest in Tezpur on May 6, pending investigation into the case. He had obtained a one-month interim bail on June 6, the day the alleged kidnapping occurred. 

Meanwhile, the Director General of Prisons, L Thechamo Lotha informed that a departmental inquiry has been initiated to probe into the alleged incident. “(I) have directed the Superintendent of (Central) Jail, to make a thorough inquiry and submit a detailed report” on the incident, the DG of Prisons said.
