Kuki Inpi Manipur appeals to PM for safety and security of Kuki-Zo People

DIMAPUR, JULY 10 (MExN): The  Kuki Inpi Manipur has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention in the ongoing ethnic crisis in Manipur.

The letter highlighted the recent arrest of five Kuki-Zo individuals, including a juvenile, which has sparked widespread outrage within the community. The Kuki Inpi Manipur expressed their concerns over what they perceive as discriminatory treatment by law enforcement authorities. “There is an unequal and discriminatory regime in the hills (where AFSPA is under force) and plains (where it is most needed but lifted). Correspondingly, the biased actions of central security forces colluding with Meitei militias in these arrests and targeted intimidation of our people are deeply regrettable and can only worsen the law and order situation in the Manipur region,” the letter stated.

In their appeal, Kuki Inpi Manipur urged that law enforcement agencies consult with them for coordination and cooperation in enforcing the law. They insisted that any arrested Kuki-Zo individuals should be handed over to the District Police of either Kangpokpi or Churachandpur, avoiding the valley districts. The letter strongly disapproved of the appointment of Meitei Army and Police officers as Operational Commanders due to past instances of “biased” conduct against the Kuki-Zo people and expressed concern over the home-posting of Meitei officers in armed forces. Furthermore, they demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the five arrested Kuki-Zo individuals, viewing their arrest as arbitrary and biased.

The ongoing violence in Manipur has severely affected the Kuki-Zo community, disrupting education and economic activities.
The letter detailed issues such as the non-declaration of examination results, economic blockades, and the lack of development funds and infrastructure in Kuki-Zo areas, describing these conditions as a gross violation of constitutional values and principles.

The letter also called attention to the systemic failure to protect Kuki lives and properties, citing repeated targeting, arson attacks, and unwarranted arrests.

Kuki Inpi Manipur advocated for the establishment of a distinct administration to ensure the protection of their rights and foster harmonious coexistence, believing this measure will address the unique needs and aspirations of the Kuki people, promoting peace and stability in the region.

"As the Kuki-Zo people continue to bear the brunt of targeted ethnic oppression orchestrated by the Manipur state government, Kuki Inpi Manipur writes this letter with fervent hope in your capable administration to expedite the ongoing political dialogue with the Kuki-Zo SoO groups for lasting peace and stability in the region, and to safeguard the rights and privileges of the Kuki-Zo people as equal citizens of the country," the letter concluded.
