As part of the nationwide campaign Khet Bachao Abhiyan, being observed from June 1 to 30 to promote soil health and sustainable agriculture, ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Wokha organised an awareness-cum-input distribution programme at Old Riphyim village on June 17.
The programme focused on enhancing farmers’ understanding of soil health management and encouraging the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. During the event, KVK scientists delivered technical sessions and practical demonstrations on organic farming, soil sample collection, soil testing, balanced fertiliser application and scientific soil health management for hill agriculture.
Addressing the participants, the scientists emphasised the importance of maintaining soil fertility through integrated nutrient management, increased use of organic inputs and soil test-based fertiliser recommendations. “Healthy soil is fundamental to sustainable crop production, food security, environmental conservation and improved rural livelihoods,” they noted.
More than 200 farmers, farm women and rural youth attended the programme and participated in the interactive discussions. They were sensitised on the need to adopt eco-friendly farming methods and scientific nutrient management practices to improve productivity while preserving natural resources for future generations.
To support crop diversification and strengthen nutritional security, KVK Wokha distributed critical agricultural inputs to the participants. These included seeds of Biofortified High Quality Protein Maize (HQPM), groundnut and soybean (KDS variety), aimed at promoting improved crop varieties and enhancing farm income.
The programme concluded with an appeal to farmers to embrace sustainable farming technologies and soil conservation measures to ensure long-term agricultural resilience and productivity.
