
Dimapur, August 20 (MExN): On August 17 Kohima Law College under the guide Lecturer Kezhokhoto Savi conducted Legal Literacy & Awareness campaign in collaboration with Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NLSA) & Nagaland Voulntary Consumers' Organisation(NVCO) at St. Joseph's College Jakhama.
Consumer Rights was one of the main topics where the grievances of students travelling between Kohima & Jakhama daily was discuss as Tata Sumo fare between Kohima & Jakhama was Rs.20/- per head some months ago and was raised by Rs.5/- which was fixed by the owner and drivers of southern angami area but the more worse was that recently the fare was raised by Rs.10/- per head and now it has going upto Rs.35/- per head and this was raise and fixed without the consent and approval of competent authority i.e government particularly the Regional Transport Authority. Increasing Rs.10/- at a time for a distance of 17 kms and imposing citizens especially the students is a very serious case and cannot be tolerated, stated a press note.
The note also stated that the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers' Organisation appreciated and extended full support to the Southern Angami Students' Union (SASU) in their initiative and fighting against the excessive increase in the TataSumo/taxi/bus fare in the Southern area which is amounting to consumers' rights exploitation stating no where fare has raise or increase in this manner and it is also illegal as NGO/association/ union/federation are not competent to fix the rate of fare.
The lifting up of check-gates in the state except inter-state border check-gates & Chumukedima check-gate was discussed and further emphasized seriously about SAPO tax and pay-counters lying southern Angami area continue to function as it was earlier and even Village authority collect cash in the name of tax on stone, firewood, etc which is illegal and the main object to lift check-gates by the state government was mainly to remove illegal collection of cash on the high ways.
Also, the other topics were Legal Service Authority, F.I.R, Juvenile(Care & Children Protection), Your rights if arrested & R.T.I were dwelt by several speakers. The booklet & pamphlets printed and published by the Nagaland Legal Services Authority were distributed to the students. Earlier Kohima Law College conduct legal literacy & awareness at Japfü Christian College Kigwema on 30th July, 2011 and shall be continue to cover some more colleges and higher secondary school which include DonBosco Higher Secondary School Kohima to be held on next Friday.
Kezhokhoto Savi President NVCO says that our state government is already in full preparation for State Consumer Helpline and the launching ceremony would be held in a big publicity manner where the number of TOLL FREE would be given and the citizen/consumer can call to this TOLL FREE number for any consumer complaint/grievances. Recently Kezhokhoto Savi and Haikambe Zeliang were trained for the management of consumer helpline in the state at Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi.
On 18th Aug, 2011 the LL.B VIth Semester students of Kohima Law College as part of B.C.I Practical Paper visits Juvenile Home(Special/Observation), Pherima under the BCI Practical Paper Lecturer-in-charged Shri. Kezhokhoto Savi. The visits was mainly to study the Home and the several cases of the inmates. The Superintendent of the Home Shri. Satahi Shüjo and Care Taker Shri. Deepak Chetri brief the students about the management of the Home and also highlighted future programmes and some research work where law students and law graduates can take up. Interaction with officials & staff was helpful to law students as it is part of their BCI Practical Paper which is to be submitted soon. The students also had interaction with inmates where several boys below 18 years of age had committed theft, rape, murder, etc. & also read the court papers.
Today twenty(20) students from Kohima Law College is leaving for Delhi to join the National Law University Delhi as part of study exchange programme for fifteen(15) days and the students would be also visiting the Supreme Court of India, Delhi High Court and some few district courts in Delhi. This is the programme initiated by the Hon'ble Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Mr. Justice Madan B. Lokur during his visit to our state in the month of December, 2010 who is also the Chancellor of National Law University.
