LEH calls for impartial probe into sexual violence cases

Wokha, June 20 (MExN): The Lotha Eloe Hoho (LEH) has strongly condemned the recent incidents of sexual assault and rape reported in Nagaland, describing them as heinous crimes that have deeply shocked society and called for swift justice for the victims.

In a statement issued on June 19, the women's organisation expressed particular concern over the alleged rape of an 82-year-old woman at High School Ward, Kiphire, reportedly involving an Armed Branch Constable of DEF Kiphire.

The Hoho said the allegation was especially disturbing as it involved a member of a disciplined force entrusted with protecting citizens and upholding the rule of law. It stated that individuals vested with public trust must maintain the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and accountability, adding that if the allegations are proven true, the act would constitute a grave betrayal of public trust and an affront to the dignity and rights of women.

The organisation also strongly condemned the reported sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl allegedly committed by a 40-year-old church youth leader from Kohima Village during church-related activities.

It said the incident had caused widespread anguish as it involved a person occupying a position of moral responsibility and influence over young people.

The LEH described both incidents as serious crimes against women and children and reiterated that sexual violence can never be tolerated or justified under any circumstances. It stated that such acts violate the physical and emotional well-being of victims, erode the moral fabric of society and undermine public confidence in institutions entrusted with care, protection and leadership.

The Hoho called upon law enforcement agencies and the concerned authorities to ensure fair, impartial and expeditious investigations into both cases and to bring the perpetrators to justice in accordance with the law.

It also urged the authorities to safeguard the rights, dignity and privacy of the victims throughout the legal process.

Appealing for greater collective responsibility, the organisation called on churches, community leaders, civil society organisations, parents and citizens to remain vigilant and work together to create a safer environment for women and children.

Stressing that protecting the vulnerable and upholding human dignity is a shared responsibility, the Lotha Eloe Hoho expressed solidarity with the victims and their families and prayed that justice would be delivered swiftly and transparently.
