Let us not recollect the bitter past: Azo

Meluri (Phek) | September 8 : Sharing the pain and sorrow with citizens of Matikhru village under Meluri Sub-division at the first ever ‘Black Day Memorial Cup’ on September 7, Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu stated that during 1960 the Matikhru villagers faced untold sufferings in the hands of Indian Paramilitary forces.
It was on September 6, 1960, almost 80% men folk from Matikhru village were massacred by the 16th Punjab Regiment of the Indian Army. The minister said, without any valid reason, the paramilitary forces raped women publicly, tortured both old and young, burned down the granaries and houses to ashes leaving the entire village almost empty.
Nienu added that the deplorable actions of the armed forces could not be reprimanded which was a total denial of justice for the innocent people.
Congratulating the Pochury Students’ Union (PSU) for organizing the first ever ‘Black Day Memorial Cup’ on the theme “Goal for History” commemorating with the annual Black day observation held at Matikhru Village September 6, Nienu further questioned, ‘how can the Indian army torture, kill innocent people and rape all the women? How can our protector do such inhuman things to us?’
Nienu however stated that as Christians let bygone be bygone and forgive the Indian Army and Paramilitary forces. Nienu conveyed a special message to the Pochury community: “Lets’ not recollect the bitter past in order not to destroy a perfect future.”
Honouring the martyrs of September 6 massacre, Nienu expressed his sympathy to the relatives of the victims who faceda tragedy from the clutches of the Indian armed forces.
Meanwhile a separate report stated that September 6 has been a Black Day for the Pochuries whereas the rest of the Naga tribes have been observing September 6 as “Peace Day” because of the fact that in 1964 on that fateful day a bilateral ‘cease fire’ agreement was signed between the GOI and the Naga undergrounds, bringing the much needed respite to the Nagas.
It is to be noted that on that day in 1960, nine innocent persons from Matikhru village were killed by the Indian armed forces by beheading them one by one. An act of representative of naked genocide perpetrated on innocent villagers was enforced by the Indian armed forces.
The sources further revealed that despite such barbaric provocation and inhuman killings of the civilians by the unruly Indian armed forces, the Naga freedom fighters released the captured pilots viz; Capt. Anand Sinha, Flight Officer RE Raphael, Sergeant JC Chowdury and other five crew members unharmed after two years of captivity.
Mention may be made that on September 4, 1960 some leaders from Phor village were tortured to death by the armed forces without any valid reasons by smearing chilly powder in their private parts and even forcing them to inhale it. With their hands and feet tied were hanged upside down from the roof. The people of Phor as part of paying their homage to those people who suffered martyrdom for the cause of the Nagas observes September 4 as “Martyrs Day”.
