Zunheboto observed Safer Internet Day 2026 on February 10 at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall, with an emphasis on promoting the safe, responsible and informed use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI).

Organised under the theme “Smart Tech, Safe Choices: Exploring the Safe and Responsible Use of AI,” the event aimed to raise awareness on digital safety, ethical use of technology and cyber responsibility among various stakeholders.

Addressing the occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Zunheboto, Tiameren Chang highlighted that Safer Internet Day is observed annually to create awareness on the safe and responsible use of the internet and emerging technologies.

Emphasising that society is now living in the era of AI, he urged people to use AI wisely rather than being controlled or misled by it.

“Let us use AI, but not allow AI to use us,” he remarked, underscoring the primacy of human judgement.

ADC Chang also dwelt on the impact of the internet on Naga society, noting that while it has opened doors to knowledge, connectivity and development, it has also introduced challenges and risks.

He cautioned the younger generation against the misuse of digital platforms and AI, and called for ethical and mindful use of technology so that it contributes positively to society.

In a detailed presentation on Safer Internet Day, District Informatics Officer, NIC, Zunheboto, Himanshu Ranjan traced the evolution of the internet from slow connectivity to a powerful global tool, highlighting its widespread use across various sectors.

He reminded participants that with greater technological power comes greater responsibility.

Ranjan also outlined the disadvantages of improper internet use, including addiction, mental stress, cyberbullying, loss of productivity, misinformation affecting social harmony, online scams and investment fraud.

He cautioned against clicking unsafe links and warned about OTP and UPI frauds, malware attacks, deepfakes, and AI-generated images and videos used for scamming.

Ranjan further advised users to access only secure websites with HTTPS, use unique and strong passwords with numeric combinations and two-factor authentication such as fingerprints, change UPI PINs regularly, avoid public Wi-Fi for financial transactions, and remain cautious of CCTV cameras while entering PINs.

Users were also urged to always log out after completing online transactions, with Ranjan noting that many government websites and banks use two-factor verification.

The event began with a welcome address by the chairperson, Dr L Chuchong Noklang, EAC, Zunheboto, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Octoli Chischi, DRM, NIC, Zunheboto.
