Liverpool group bags top honours at SJU Varsity Sports Week

Chümoukedima, March 28 (MExN): The Varsity Sports Week 2026 of SJU concluded on March 27 with a vibrant valedictory programme at the University Ground, marking the end of a three-day sporting event held from March 25 to 27 under the theme “Ignite the Athlete Within.”

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation, commendable sportsmanship and a strong sense of unity among students. Competitions included major team sports such as football, basketball, volleyball, kho-kho, kabaddi and cricket, alongside special events like Fittest Josephite, penalty shootout, obstacle race, tug of war and a talent show.

Track and field events such as 100m, 200m and 800m races, along with long jump, high jump, shot put and relay races, highlighted athletic excellence. Indoor and strength-based events including table tennis, chess, arm wrestling and traditional Naga wrestling (Kene) also drew significant participation.

Fun activities such as crab walking race, fill the brick challenge and bread eating contest added vibrancy to the programme. An exhibition football match between SJUSC and SJU faculty emerged as a key highlight, fostering camaraderie between students and teachers.

Group 6 – Liverpool, comprising the Departments of Physical Education & Sports, Sociology, Social Work, Botany and Chemistry, emerged as the overall champion. The Best Discipline Trophy was awarded to Real Madrid Team (Department of Political Science), while Viketo Zhimo of Liverpool team was adjudged Best Player.

Rodrik Sangma from Real Madrid Team won the Fittest Josephite title, while Nuza Ruho clinched top honours in Naga wrestling (Kene).

The programme featured the presentation of the annual sports report and prize distribution, recognising the efforts of participants, organisers and volunteers.
