Kohima, October 18 (MExN): The dispute over the award of SARDP-NE projects in Nagaland to Gayatri-Maytas, a joint venture, escalated with the local contractors under the banner of the Nagaland Government Registered Class–I Contractors Union (NGRC-ICU) walking out of a meeting convened with the intention to resolve differences yesterday at the Conference Hall of the NPWD.
The NGRC-ICU members staged the walkout in protest when the Engineer-in-Chief, Er. Vikuotuolie Angami started deriding the contractors in an aggressive attitude while the Engineer-in-Chief was clarifying the department’s position on the issue. Declaring that such aggressive attitude was not acceptable and demeaning to the contractors, the members staged a walkout. The meeting had in attendance leaders of NGOs including the Naga Hoho, Naga Mothers’ Association and Naga Students’ Federation besides the Chief Engineer and the Superintending Engineer. The NGRC-1CU is of the view that these global firms are driven purely by a commission motive rather than that of executing the project with sincerity and responsibility.
The project in question is for two laning of Longleng-Changtongya, Mon-Tamlu-Merangkong, Phek-Pfütsero and Zunheboto-Chakhabama roads in the state under Phase ‘A’ of SARDP-NE. Gayatri Projects Ltd of Hyderabad, in a joint venture with Maytas Infra Ltd, are executing the projects.
