A marching contingent, led by the school band, performs a ceremonial march past during the opening of the 54th Loyola HSS Annual Sports Meet in Kiphire on April 16.

Kiphire, April 16 (MExN): The 54th Annual Sports Meet of Loyola Higher Secondary School, Kiphire, was inaugurated on Thursday with enthusiasm and vibrant participation, with this year’s theme “Victory through Effort” highlighting perseverance and dedication.

The event was graced by Rajiv Sharma, Commandant of the 30th Battalion, Assam Rifles, Kiphire Town, as the special guest. He was accompanied by his wife, Shikha Satsangi, a retired officer from the Judge Advocate General branch of the Indian Army.

The programme began with an invocation prayer led by Vice Principal Sr Alice, followed by opening remarks by Rev Fr Philip, who welcomed the gathering and underscored the importance of sports in building character and discipline.

The sports meet was formally declared open with the unfurling of the flag by the special guest. A drill display by students of Classes 5, 6 and 7 added colour to the inaugural ceremony.

One of the highlights of the event was the march past, featuring Scouts and Guides, four school houses, Class 12 students and two junior contingents. Their synchronised performance reflected discipline, teamwork and dedication.

Addressing the students, Sharma emphasised the value of hard work and perseverance. “We don’t believe in shortcuts, but we believe in efforts,” he said, encouraging students to remain consistent and resilient. He added that a true winner is one who refuses to quit.

The programme was attended by Rev Fr John Poji, Principal of St Xavier Higher Secondary School, Shamator; Rev Fr Thomas Toretkiu, Principal of St John School, Kiusam Town; members of St Peter’s Church Council, alumni, School Managing Board members, representatives from USSC and KASU, as well as parents and well-wishers.

Following the inauguration, an exhibition tug-of-war match between alumni and parents against teachers was held, with participation from the special guest in both male and female categories. The friendly contest drew enthusiastic response from the audience, and winners were awarded medals.

The inaugural ceremony concluded on a high note, setting the tone for a spirited and energetic sports meet in the days ahead.
