Malaria camp held at Viphoma

Kohima, July 17 (MExN): In a prompt action by the department of health & family weelfare, the Medical Officer Dr. M. Sekhose Incharge Primary Health Centre, Zhadima Village and Kohima District Malaria team led by Toso, AMO (Asst. Malaria Officer) under the Kohima Chief Medical Officer conducted an emergency Health Camp cum Malaria diagnostic tests on July 12 last at Viphoma village in response to an SOS call from the village council in view of the alarmingly increasing complaints of villagers with fever and flu like symptoms.
According to official reports, 12 villagers were tested positive of Plasmodium vivax (PV) malaria while fortunately no test resulted in Plasmodium Falciparum (PF) out of a total of 188 slides tested.
It may be mentioned that PF form of malaria is the fatal one and should be promptly diagnose and treated immediately. Therefore the Health agencies make it a point to test both types of Malaria in any suspicious case to confirm and thereby treatment given. While other forms of malaria are much less likely to prove fatal.
The Health camp also provided medical consultancy to as many as 220 patients in a single day. Viphoma village despite its close proximity to the capital of the state is burden with bad roads and poor communication and is medically categorized as Malaria endemic as per the India Public Health Standard (IPHS) as stated by officials.
Classic symptoms of Malaria attack would be: fever and shivering. The attack begins with fever, with the temperature rising as high as 40ºC and falling again over a period of several hours, a poor general condition, feeling unwell and having headaches like influenza, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting often occur as well.
When the temperature drops, the patient often sweats profusely and feels much better. Then the same day, or one to two days later, further attacks occur with feeling generally unwell, high temperature and so on.
The MO, Zhadima PHC also encouraged people from all walks of life to immediately report to health authorities on any signs of medical emergency so as to prevent fatalities which are preventable.
