Manipur MLA killed in Delhi road mishap

Imphal, August 18 (NNN): Manipur sitting legislator Elangbam Suraj was killed in a road accident in Delhi on Thursday. Reports reaching here said a car in which E Suraj was traveling was hit by another vehicle at Mayur Vihar, New Delhi in the wee hours of Thursday. Official sources said the driver of the car however survived but with grievous injuries.
Sources said E Suraj died at the spot when the Santro car he was traveling in collided head on with a Tata Sumo vehicle at about 1 am today. E Suraj was survived by his wife Neeta, two sons and a daughter. He was 44. Suraj got elected from the Yaiskul assembly constituency in Imphal in the by election held in December 2009 following the demise of his father E Kunjeswar, in New Delhi on August 4 who was also a sitting MLA.
According to reports, E Suraj went to the national capital in connection with the Committee of Public Account and Estimate of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. Suraj was  one of the members of the committee.
In his unexpected death, Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Manipur Legislative Assembly, Manipur Pradesh Congress Party (MPCC) and others have condoled.
Governor Gurbachan, in his condolence message to the family of the deceased said Suraj was one of the young leaders of the state who had a great future waiting for him. “His untimely demise has left an irreparable void in his constituency Yaiskul in particular and Manipur at large, which will be difficult to fill up.”
Elangbam Suraj was a man of principle and great political vision, said the Chief Minister in his condolence message to the family, adding that “a gentle soul, who will be fondly remembered by all of us for his straight forwardness and understanding nature.” On his demise, the state has lost an eminent political leader, it added. The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) condoled to the MLA’s demise by lowering the Congress flag a half. A two minutes silent was also observed in a condolence meeting held at the Congress Bhavan, Imphal today. MPCC president Gaikhangam expressed his share to the shock and bereave of the family.
