The United Naga Council (UNC) is likely to call off its ongoing “trade embargo” after receiving a formal invitation from the Union Government to resume talks on the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and border fencing issues.
The government’s invitation, signed by Manipur Chief Secretary Dr Puneet Kumar Goel, stated that the Central Government had noted the concerns raised by the UNC and other stakeholders.
"Accordingly, the Central Government has been holding and will continue to hold dialogue with the UNC and other stakeholders for prior consultations before fencing works are taken up. The next tripartite meeting with the UNC will be held on a mutually convenient date and venue,” it read.
“In view of the above, it is requested that any form of agitation in this regard may be withdrawn in the larger public interest," the invitation added.
Following this invitation from the government, UNC leaders informed the Newmai News Network tonight that an emergency "presidential council meeting" of the Council will be convened at its office at 12.30 pm on September 11 to discuss "urgent matters relating to the ongoing trade embargo," with participation of tribe presidents.
Meanwhile, well-placed sources said that the UNC is likely to suspend the ongoing "trade embargo" before the dialogue takes place.
It may be noted that, following the failure of talks on the issues of FMR and border fencing between the UNC-led Naga organisations and representatives of the GoI on August 26 in Delhi, the UNC enforced a "trade embargo in Naga areas" under its jurisdiction from the midnight of September 8 until further notification.
