Manipur’s Omicron case rises to 7 as six more detected

Manipur reported six new cases of Omicron today, taking the cumulative count of the fast-spreading variant to seven in the state.

The Health department said that six new Omicron cases were detected in the state. Of these six new cases, one was female from a foreign country and another male a visitor to the state. The rest were close contacts. The visitor has already left the state, the Health department. However, there is not a single active case of the WHO declared “variant of concern” in the state as of now as all the close contacts were also discharged upon recovery, an official source said.

In Manipur, the first case of Omicron was reported on December 27 last when a resident from Imphal West district who returned from Tanzania tested positive. Three contacts (all family members) of the first cases were tested positive for the new variant. They were discharged after recovery, the source further said.

The Health department then said that tracing of other close contacts of the positive cases and containment measures are in place.

Cross notification has been sent, said COVID-19 Common Control Room of the state government, while reiterating the Health department’s advice to follow Covid appropriate behavior strictly and vaccinated against COVID-19.
