Mon, August 4 (MExN): The Konyak Union has issued an urgent appeal to the Minister, Planning & Transformation, National Highways, Government of Nagaland, seeking immediate intervention for the restoration of roads in Mon district, which have been devastated by relentless rainfall and massive landslides since July 19, 2026.
The Konyak Union (KU) President K Yamao Konyak, President and General Secretary Wango Konyak in a representation submitted through the Deputy Commissioner, Mon, highlighted the unprecedented natural calamity that has triggered flash floods and mudslides across the district, causing extensive damage to road infrastructure and rendering numerous villages inaccessible. “The prolonged disruption has severely affected the transportation of essential commodities, medical services, emergency response, and the daily lives of the people,” highlighted.
Despite the immense challenges, Konyak Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have been working round the clock alongside the district administration to restore connectivity. The CSOs have mobilized 11 JCB excavators, 1 Poclain excavator, and 10 dumpers, with numerous volunteers assisting in the restoration efforts on the ground. However, continuous rainfall has repeatedly triggered fresh landslides, undoing the progress and making it increasingly difficult to reopen roads with the limited resources currently available.
In view of the gravity of the situation, the KU has earnestly appealed to all concerned agencies to urgently deploy additional heavy machinery, technical manpower, and all necessary resources to Mon District. The Union has further requested that the damaged road stretches be accorded the highest priority to restore normal connectivity at the earliest, ensuring the safety, welfare, and livelihood of the people.
The people of Mon District continue to face immense hardship due to the ongoing monsoon, and the Union has expressed sincere hope that their appeal will receive kind and immediate consideration. Timely intervention and support, KU noted, would greatly alleviate suffering and help prevent further risks arising from the continuing adverse weather conditions.
