Imphal | December 28
Manipur People Against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (MANPAC) convenor, Yumnamcha Dilipkumar was picked by the police on Friday night only to be released on Saturday morning.
Alleging the police action as a part of BJP-led coalition government’s attempt to gag the anti-CAA campaigners, MANPAC on Saturday reiterated its firm stand against the CAA.
According to reports, Dilipkumar was picked by a team of police commandos from his home at Naoremthong Shamusang in Imphal West district last (Friday) night, around 11 pm. He was then detained at Lamphel police station the whole night and released Saturday morning.
On Friday, MANPAC, while alleging BJP’s proposed rally in support of CAA on December 29 in Imphal was against the wishes of the people, had appealed the people not to participate in the rally.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, MANPAC leaders urged the state government not to attempt to gag the civil society organizations protesting against CAA.
MANPAC co-convenor, Abdullah Phundreimayum termed it unfortunate that the government is trying to suppress the freedom of expression which is the fundamental rights of every citizen. He said that MANPAC had stood against CAB and will always stand against CAA.
