The three-day Midland Youth Sports Meet 2026, themed "Promoting Unity, Fellowship and Sportsmanship through Sports", began at the Mezhür Higher Secondary School premises in Kohima on July 22.
Organised by the Midland Youth Organization (MYO), the meet will conclude on July 24, with participants competing for the championship titles in basketball and penalty shootout events.
Addressing the inaugural programme, Thungdeno Mezhür Sekhose lauded the MYO for bringing together the youth through sports and suggested that the organisation introduce more sporting disciplines in future editions of the meet.
She encouraged the participants to give their best in pursuit of excellence and urged the residents of Midland Colony to extend their support to the MYO for building a strong and vibrant community.
MYO president Ako Koso (Madi) said the sports meet aims to promote the skills and talents of the youth and motivate them to excel at higher levels of sporting competitions.
The inaugural programme was chaired by Kevisier Thapo, while Neisalie Rossi, pastor of Midland Baptist Church, invoked God's blessings.
Mezanuo Ngukha presented a special number, and MYO Games and Sports Secretary Nourhekhotuo Liezietsu administered the oath to the participating teams.
Midland Council chairman Menuokholie Kire will attend the closing ceremony on July 24, the organisers said.
