The Congress party in Mizoram accused the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) of creating political chaos in Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) and intimidating the people to earn votes. Election to the 12-member SHC is due on November 5.

In a press statement issued on October 25, media cell of the Congress alleged that the MNF has intimidated the people of SHC area to vote for the MNF candidates in order to form the MNF led government in the council. It said that SHC was established as a result of the peace accord signed between the erstwhile Congress government headed by Lal Thanhawla and Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic)  in April last year.

It then said that when the interim government was formed in July last year, the Congress government had nominated members from various Hmar organizations irrespective of party affiliation.

Citing that the council area has been unrest for more than 30 years due to insurgency, the Congress said that stable and responsible government in SHC is the need of the hour in order to develop the people. The party also vowed to make MNF free government in the council. Polling for the first SHC election will be held on November 5 during which total of 20,914 voters including 10,405  female voters would exercise their franchise in 38 polling stations to decide the fate of 12 members. The upcoming election will be a straight fight between the ruling MNF and Congress.
