MLA Achumbemo Kikon conducted a site inspection on April 4 to assess the ongoing construction of the Nagaland Foothill Road (NFHR) under the Bhandari Subdivision, executed by the Public Works Department (PWD) and Baghty Division. The inspection was accompanied by representatives from the contractor JK Construction, along with local leaders from the Lotha Lower Range Public Organisation (LLRPO) and Yanmhon Area Public Organisation (YAPO).

During the visit, Kikon stressed the critical importance of the project and urged the construction firm to adhere to the prescribed specifications and timelines. He highlighted the need to maintain high standards in the quality of materials and workmanship to ensure the road’s long-term durability and functionality.

Kikon expressed the urgency of completing the road by March 2025, stressing that the people of his constituency expect tangible progress and eventual road access by this deadline. He called for an expedited approach from the construction firm, including the deployment of adequate machinery and workforce, to set a high standard for regional infrastructure development.

The MLA raised concerns over the delayed start to the project, explaining that while the work order had been issued in November 2024, unforeseen delays meant that construction did not begin until February 2025, resulting in a loss of four crucial months. Despite this setback, Kikon reiterated the commitment to moving forward without further disruptions and underscored the need to maintain momentum.

Reflecting on the historical neglect of infrastructure in the region, Kikon acknowledged that the area had often been deemed backward due to poor road connectivity. He reaffirmed his determination to change this narrative, emphasising that the completion of the NFHR would significantly improve connectivity within the region and beyond.

The inspection also brought attention to the issue of high-tension electric poles, which had been left unaddressed during the earth-cutting phase of the project. Kikon raised concerns about the safety risks posed by these poles, as they currently obstruct the road construction area. He urged the relevant authorities to take swift corrective measures to avoid any hazards and ensure the smooth progress of the roadworks.

Kikon expressed gratitude to the local community and landowners whose properties were affected by the construction. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by the residents, particularly those whose farmland and plantations—such as rubber and areca nut cultivation—had been impacted by the road project. Their cooperation was vital in facilitating the successful execution of the construction work.

The MLA recognised the collective role of the community in the realisation of this significant infrastructure development, urging continued support and participation throughout the project’s completion. He stressed that unity and collaboration would be essential to delivering a high-quality, durable road that would serve the region for generations.

Leaders from both the LLRPO and YAPO expressed their appreciation for the progress made thus far, particularly the earth-cutting work completed under Baghty Division. They reiterated their commitment to ensuring that the road project not only meets technical specifications but also sets a benchmark for high-quality infrastructure in the region. They pledged their full support to guarantee that the road is completed on time and to the highest standard, ultimately enhancing connectivity and driving further development across the area.
