Ambulance drivers receive practical training on CPR and emergency response techniques during the orientation training on road safety and first aid at District Hospital Mon.
Mon, June 9 (MExN): Recognizing the crucial role of ambulance drivers in saving lives and ensuring timely medical care, orientation training on road safety and first aid was conducted for the drivers at the conference hall of District Hospital, Mon on June 9.
Dr Nyamnyei, Medical Officer, District Hospital Mon, chairing the programme, highlighted the importance of continuous learning and skill enhancement for ambulance drivers whose services often make a critical difference during medical emergencies.
The first session on road safety was led by Latwang Konyak, ASI, from the SP Office, Mon. Adopting an interactive and engaging approach Konyak encouraged participants to actively take part by answering questions on basic traffic rules and regulations. Through practical examples and real-life scenarios, he explained the importance of adhering to traffic guidelines and how responsible driving contributes not only to road safety but also to the efficient transportation of patients during emergencies.
Speaking on the responsibilities of ambulance drivers, Khoatun Konyak, ARSEI, District Transport Office, Mon, acknowledged that drivers often witness moments of both joy and sorrow alongside patients and their families, making their role much more than simply operating a vehicle.

He outlined key responsibilities expected of ambulance drivers, including maintaining vehicles in good condition, ensuring cleanliness and sanitation after every patient transfer, planning safe and efficient travel routes, providing smooth and safe transportation, assisting with patient care when required, and ensuring that medical equipment and essential supplies remain readily available at all times. “Ambulance drivers must be quick thinkers who are prepared to respond effectively in challenging situations,’ he emphasised.
The practical session was conducted by Dr Nyamnyei, who demonstrated the basic use of oxygen cylinders, including correct operation, selection of appropriate oxygen delivery masks, and administering oxygen according to the patient's condition. Participants were also trained on the use of cannulas and saline, basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques, safe removal of nasogastric tubes, and essential patient care practices during transportation.
The training provided participants with valuable knowledge and hands-on experience aimed at strengthening emergency response services in the district. Through such initiatives, the health department continues to enhance the capacity of frontline personnel who play a vital role in delivering timely and life-saving healthcare services to the people of Mon, a press release added.
The programme was attended by resource persons, including Khongwang, ASI, SP Office Mon, Ponwan W, UBC, SP Office Mon, and all ambulance drivers serving under the establishments of the Chief Medical Officer and Medical Superintendent, Mon.
