MPP urge Centre to intervene, break deadlock over Sadar Hills district demand

Imphal, September 22 (NNN): Manipur People’s Party (MPP) has urged the Central government to intervene and break the deadlock following the ongoing Sadar Hills district demand or pack its Constitution and leave the state. “The Indian government must either intervene and resolving the impasse on the Sadar Hills district demand or take its Constitution and leave the state,” said senior MPP leader O Joy here today. Observing that the act of imposing economic blockade on national highways is illegal and a culpable crime, the MPP leader regretted the smug silence posture of the Central government. “The Indian government seems to be playing a nasty game by remaining indifferent to the issue,” he said.
While noting that the ongoing economic blockade on national highways which entered its 53rd day today has incurred crores of rupees lost to the exchequer, he said that this has resulted in pauperization of the entire population with the poor being the hardest hit. The state and the central government must put their heads together to bring prompt and amicable solution to the Sadar Hills issue and relief the people of the state from the scrooge of inflation, Mr. Joy said.  He also regretted the fact that national highways have been used much too often and frivolously by groups as a bargaining tool against the government and recalled the Supreme Court verdict that made imposing economic blockade illegal. Referring to Sadar Hills and Jiribam districts demand as justified, the MPP leader said that as long as the demands are for administrative exigency the party will extend its support but if the demand has a communal motive it will rescind its support.
Members of MPP led by its president Dr. Nimaichand Luwang today staged a sit-in demonstration before the party’s office near Polo Ground in Imphal against the crisis in the state generated by economic blockade imposed by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) and United Naga Council (UNC).
Meanwhile, MPP through its president Dr. Nimaichand Luwang has written a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India for his intervention in resolving the issue.  “Words will fail to describe the woes and suffering of the people of Manipur now, particularly the poor due to the non availability and, if available, the sky rocketing prices of essential commodities,” stated the memorandum to the PM.
The memorandum attempted to draw the attention of the PM by highlighting the prices of the most basics of vegetables which it termed as “alarming”: “It is unbelievable that the price of onion soars up to Rs. 100 per kg while potato sells at Rs. 45 per kg. The price of one gas cylinder is Rs. 1500 and petrol is sold at Rs. 130 per liter.” “The most shocking news…was that of the torching of trucks carrying life saving drugs and medicine items along national highway 2 by blockade supporters…which has greatly affected the working of hospitals, medical, healthcare centers as well as private patients,” stated MPP and added that this is a “direct attack on the lives of the people of Manipur which is too much to tolerate.”
Reiterating that economic blockade is “illegal and unlawful…used very rarely as a war time strategy by warring countries when there is no law…to strangulate the populace to slow death,” the MPP blamed it on “something is wrong in the governance of the state.”
