
Shillong, September 14 (NNN): The Congress led Meghalya United Alliance (MUA) government won the trust vote with comfortable margin during the no confidence motion that was carried out on a head count on Wednesday.
The debate on the no confidence motion took nearly five hours before the Speaker announced the results after the head count. The MUA secured 43 votes while the NCP secured 13 votes. Two legislators abstained from voting and one MLA was absent.
While the debate on the no confidence motion witnessed statements that were not befitting to practices and convention of the Meghalaya legislative assembly, yet the hard fact is that a new precedent has taken place.
During the last hour of the debate to determine the process of announcing the results, the NCP wanted the Speaker to go for a secret ballot while the ruling wanted the convention of voice vote or head count to be adopted.
