New Delhi, May 27 (MExN): Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, on Wednesday assured towards upgrading the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), Kohima, into a super-specialty institute and setting up of Green Field Medical College in Naga Ki City, Chümoukedima.
The Union Minister gave his assurance during a meeting with Nagaland Minister for Health & Family Welfare, P Paiwang Konyak, held at his official residence in New Delhi on May 27.
The Deputy Director & Sr PRO, IPR, Nagaland House, New Delhi in a press release stated that the meeting was positive, with the Union Minister assuring all possible support to the proposals forth for strengthening healthcare services and infrastructure in Nagaland,
During the meeting, the Minister proposed for up-gradation of NIMSR, Kohima, (PMSSY) stating that the state government intends to introduce PG courses keeping in mind the first batch of MBBS students to complete the course in 2028. By commencing the PG courses, the minister said it will bridge the shortage of specialist doctors in the state.
The Minister also proposed for establishment of Greenfield Medical College an AIIMS institute at Naga Ki City in Chümoukedima district to address existing gaps in tertiary healthcare, medical education and specialist services in the State.
He stated that the proposed AIIMS would not only cater to the healthcare needs of Nagaland but also benefit neighboring states, while promoting medical tourism in line with the Government of India’s Act East Policy.
The Minister further requested the Centre to establish a State Cancer Institute under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS).
Highlighting the growing incidence of cancer in Nagaland, Paiwang said establishment of the institute was crucial for providing advanced oncology services, reducing referral burden outside the State, and strengthening cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care services.
The minister urged for upgradation of the State Mental Health Institute into a Centre of Excellence under the National Mental Health Programme.
He sought approval for establishment of a State Allied Health Professional Institute at Kohima to strengthen allied healthcare education, augment skilled healthcare manpower and improve delivery of quality healthcare services in the State.
Further, Paiwang proposed establishment of Accident and Trauma Centres in the remaining 12 districts of Nagaland to ensure equitable and timely access to emergency and trauma care services. The Minister additionally appealed for continuation of the PM-ABHIM scheme for further strengthening public health infrastructure in the State.
The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
