Nine Nagas, who were quarantined in a COVID-19 observation facility in Ahmedabad on March 21, have been released. They were released around midnight on March 22. It is clarified that the group consisted of 3 men and 6 women and not as initially reported.
ADGP/Special Commissioner of Police Delhi, Robin Hibu, in a message to The Morung Express informed that the Ahmedabad Police and Municipal administration “promptly” acted and resolved the case.
“Naga employees released from detention Centre at Sports club AMC hospital, Ahmedabad. Thanks to Ahmedabad Police and municipal administration for promptly helping in the case,” added Hibu.
Another message from the detainees, shared on social media on Sunday, informed that the Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad responded to the situation after hearing of their plight.
He “fought for us and released us from this hospital,” the message added.
In a video message, one of group members also informed that the case has been resolved and all of them are safe.
The Gujarat Government has also assured “to ensure our safety and make other arrangement,” it said.
An apparent lack of India’s ethnic composition together with mounting COVID-19 fear has given rise to instances of people from the north-east region living in various cities become victims of racist remarks based on appearance.
In this particular case, the nine Nagas, who are currently working at a private company in Hyderabad, were reportedly mistaken for Chinese nationals and placed under observation on March 21. As informed by one of them in a video message on March 21, they were picked up from their office and taken to a quarantine facility where they were tested for COVID-19. (Read the report here)
The woman, who made the video clipping, said that the tests returned negative but the quarantine personnel still insisted on extending their stay.
Meanwhile, in the national capital, the Special Police Unit for North-East Region, New Delhi, has alerted all DCSPs/District/Units/Battalions Delhi directing them to sensitize all subordinate personnel in this regard. Staff of all police stations may also be directed to keep proper surveillance in their areas and take necessary action against those persons as per law, it said in a notification.
