Dimapur, July 19 (MExN): A Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Naga women organizations today demanded public apology from the office of the Home Minister Imkong Imchen for “the slanderous defamatory statements” made by his secretary over issues related with a meeting with the minister previously. The organizations implied it was women organizations under the committee and not “a Joint Action Committee of the NMA” (Naga Mothers’ Association), that had tried to meet the minister.
The committee stated that a joint action committee consisting of all tribes’ women organizations was formed to seek justice for the May 27 violence against a Naga officer, a woman.
“Targeting the NMA has been done with willful, malafide intention to tarnish the esteemed office of the NMA. Therefore, the JAC demands an immediate clarification from the personal secretary to the Home minister on his defamatory, derogatory statements on the office of the NMA,” the statement said.
The JAC further, demands a public apology from the office of the Home minister for the vindictive defamatory statements of his personal secretary within two days. Failing to comply would force the JAC to take its own course of action, the organizations stated.
A response from the committee stated today that the signatories of the memorandum that was supposed to be submitted to the minister were leaders of the NMA, Watsu Mungdang, Tenyimia Women Organization, Pochury Women Organization and Sumi Totimi Hoho of Kohima, tribal representative Kyong Lotha Eloe Ekhung, Angamimiapfu Mechu Krotho, Chakhesang Women Society, Naga Women Hoho Dimapur, Tangkhul Women Hoho Dimapur, Mao Women Hoho, Dimapur, Zeliang Mipui Organization and the Eastern Naga Women’s Organization.
The rejoinder from the organizations stated – “In view of the urgency of the matter, the JAC made every effort through various sources to seek an appointment with the Home minister through the Watsu Mungdang on the 14th and 15th June 2011, as both the chief minister and governor were out of station. However, when we tried to get an appointment after meeting the convener, steering committee on the 15th June 2011, the JAC was informed he had left for Kohima. When we tried for meeting him at Kohima the same day we were informed he was leaving for Mokokchung in a few minutes for a wedding.”
“Finally, a delegation of the JAC went to the Home minister’s official residence on the 18th June 2011, morning at 8 a.m. The house guards told the committee that the minister was out but his wife and personal secretary were at home. The memorandum was submitted to the personal secretary through the house guards with a request for his signature on the JAC copy. However, after almost twenty minutes the house guard returned with both copies saying that the PS had refused to take the memorandum and gave a message to come when the minister returns.”
The JAC expressed shock at the ‘slanderous defamatory attack on the Naga Mothers’ Association’ by the personal secretary of the minister, ‘when the JAC has been relentlessly fighting for justice for the victim who is from the Home minister’s own tribe.’
