Nagaland, Assam make progress on oil exploration in DAB

Shillong, June 4 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday stated that Nagaland and Assam have made “significant progress” towards resuming oil and gas exploration and production activities in the Disputed Area Belt (DAB) along the inter-State border.

In a post on X on the sidelines of the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Rio said the two States had held “fruitful discussions” on the issue.

Under the guidance of the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Governments of Nagaland and Assam “have held fruitful discussions and made significant progress towards resuming exploration and production activities in the Disputed Area Belt (DAB) along the Nagaland–Assam border,” the Chief Minister stated.

The development is significant as petroleum exploration in the border areas has remained a sensitive issue for years amid the unresolved Nagaland–Assam boundary dispute and other concerns.

However, details of the discussions and any roadmap for resuming exploration activities were not immediately available.
