Nagaland district judiciary pendency dips to 4,626 in June

645 cases disposed against 619 fresh institutions

The number of pending cases across Nagaland’s district judiciary declined marginally in June, reversing the upward trend seen in the preceding months, as courts disposed of more cases than were newly instituted during the month.

According to the Nagaland District Judiciary consolidated statement report for June 2026 of the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, the courts began June with 4,655 pending cases. During the month, 619 new cases were instituted while 645 were disposed of, bringing the pendency down to 4,626 at month-end. 

The reduction of 29 cases comes after pendency had risen for three consecutive months—from 4,589 at the end of March to 4,628 in April and 4,655 in May. In May alone, 537 fresh cases were instituted against 506 disposals, resulting in a net addition of 27 cases. 

Dimapur continued to carry the bulk of the State’s district judiciary caseload. The six courts based in Dimapur collectively had 2,980 pending cases at the end of June, accounting for around 64% of the statewide pendency.

The Principal District and Sessions Judge (PDSJ), Dimapur, remained the court with the highest pendency at 824 cases, despite disposing of 234 cases against 228 fresh institutions during June. 

It was followed by JMFC-II Dimapur with 669 pending cases, CJM Dimapur with 664 and JMFC-I Dimapur with 640. The Family Court and Fast Track Special Court (FTSC), Dimapur, ended June with 139 and 44 pending cases respectively. 

Of particular note, JMFC-II Dimapur recorded neither a fresh institution nor a disposal during June, leaving its pendency unchanged at 669 cases. 

In May, the CJM Mokokchung had been the only court in the State to record zero disposals. 

Among the courts recording notable reductions was the CJM Kohima, which disposed of 85 cases against 45 fresh institutions. Its pending caseload consequently fell from 334 at the beginning of June to 294 at month-end.

The PDSJ Kohima, however, saw a marginal increase, with 66 fresh cases against 64 disposals, taking pendency from 348 to 350. JMFC Kohima ended the month with 88 pending cases, while the Family Court had 14. 

Elsewhere, CJM Peren disposed of 11 cases against three new institutions, reducing pendency from 34 to 26, while DSJ Phek disposed of 12 cases against seven institutions, bringing its pending cases down from 29 to 24. 

Mokokchung, meanwhile, saw divergent trends. The PDSJ disposed of 25 cases against 21 institutions, reducing pendency to 118, while the CJM received 39 fresh cases but disposed of only eight, pushing its pendency from 104 to 135.
