Nagaland erupts in outrage over alleged sexual assault of minor girl

Dimapur, May 31 (MExN): Widespread outrage has erupted across Nagaland over the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old minor girl in Dimapur, with tribal bodies, women organisations, student unions, youth groups and political organisations demanding swift justice, a thorough investigation and stringent punishment for the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The organisations condemned the alleged assault of the minor by O Watimeren Jamir, who was reportedly entrusted with her care as a guardian. Several groups also called for an expanded investigation into allegations that others may have been involved in the abuse.

Among those issuing condemnation statements were the Ao Lanur Telongjem (ALT), Ao Students' Union Dimapur (ASUD), BJP Nagaland, Angami Women Organisation (AWO), Changsao Thangjam Setshang (CTS), Nagaland Pradesh Mahila Congress (NPMC), National People's Youth Front (NPYF), Dimapur Sümi Council, Yimkhiung Women Organization, Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation (ENWO), All Nagaland College Students' Union (ANCSU), Sangtamlaru Thsingmujang Dimapur (STD), Eastern Naga Women Organisation Dimapur (ENWOD), Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) and Akehta Sangtamlarü Thsingmüjang (AST).

The organisations expressed solidarity with the survivor and her family, describing the alleged crime as a grave violation of human dignity, children's rights and societal values. Many stressed that crimes against children must be met with the strongest response under the law.

Several organisations, including ALT, BJP Nagaland and AWO, appreciated the police for registering the case and initiating legal proceedings, while urging authorities to ensure a swift, transparent, impartial and time-bound investigation.

CTS, a prominent Chang civil society body, said the case highlighted broader social and institutional failures as well as the vulnerabilities faced by minors living away from home for educational purposes. The organisation said it had remained in constant touch with Dimapur-based Chang bodies and would continue pursuing the matter until justice was secured.

While calling for a transparent probe, CTS said it was not fully satisfied with the progress of the investigation and urged authorities to examine whether additional individuals may have been involved. Similar concerns were raised by AST and ANCSU, which sought a comprehensive investigation into alleged associates of the accused.

ENWO urged the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a fair and independent inquiry without interference, warning that it would closely monitor the progress of the case. The organisation also reminded parents not to send children away as domestic helpers and alleged that some children sent out for schooling were instead being made to perform domestic work, depriving them of their right to education.

A number of organisations, including STD and AST, demanded denial of bail to the accused and any alleged accomplices and called for prosecution under the strictest provisions of the POCSO Act. AST further described the allegations as a possible organised criminal conspiracy and sought the arrest of all persons found to have participated in, facilitated or abetted the offences.

ASUD emphasised the importance of due process and cautioned the public against spreading unverified information, while urging respect for the victim's privacy and the integrity of the legal process.

Most organisations also appealed to the state government and relevant authorities to provide rehabilitation, counselling and psychological support to the survivor and her family. They stressed the need for stronger child protection mechanisms, awareness programmes and community vigilance to prevent such incidents.

The case has triggered widespread concern across the state, with organisations calling on civil society, churches, educational institutions, community leaders and citizens to work collectively to ensure the safety and well-being of children.

According to reports, the accused has been taken into police custody and the case remains under investigation. The identity of the minor survivor has been withheld in accordance with legal provisions relating to children and sexual offences.
