Nagaland gets Girl’s Battalion NCC

Kohima | August 19 : The 66th Nagaland Girl’s (Independent) Company Kohima has been upgraded to 1 Nagaland Girl’s Battalion NCC Kohima as approved and sanctioned by Government of India.
With this, the strength of the Unit is to be now raised to 4,770 girl cadets, an increase of 3,020 girl cadets, which will bring a parity to the representation for girls in the NCC in Nagaland.
Coverage of NCC is presently being expanded to cover all the 11 districts of Nagaland.
Brigadier B.S. Sambyal, SM, Deputy Director General of the NCC Directorate, North Eastern Region, Shillong told the media persons here today.
The later is currently in Nagaland since August 18 as part of inspection of the NCC Group HQ at Kohima to oversee the inauguration of the upgradation of 66 Nagaland Girl (Independent) Company NCC to that of 1 Nagaland Girls Battalion NCC.
NCC group headquarters, Kohima is the overall command and coordination authority for the NCC, in Nagaland and is presently being commanded by Colonel Abhay Singh.
24 Nagaland (Independent) Company, NCC Kohima looks after the boys in the NCC, largely in the southern haft of Nagaland. It is located at High School Junction, Kohima.
25 Nagaland (Independent) Company NCC Mokokchung looks after the boys in the NCC, largely in the northern half of Nagaland. It is located opposite Mayangnokcha Govt. High HSS, Mokokchung.
1 Nagaland Air Squadron NCC Dimapur looks after the air activities in the NCC, largely around Dimapur. It is located at Purana Bazaar, Dimapur.
66 Nagaland Girls (Independent) Company NCC Kohima looks after the girls in the NCC, and is the only girls unit giving NCC coverage to girls cadets of entire Nagaland. It is located on Rev. Tanquist Road, Keziekie Colony, Kohima and is presently being commanded by Lt Colonel Joy Choudhury.
Mentionably, 66 Nagaland Gird (I) Coy NCC, Kohima was raised in 24 June 1977 at Science College Campus. This company was raised with a meager strength of 50 senior wing (girl) cadets. When the company was raised, the cadets were exclusively from Kohima district only. The unit had been accommodated in a hired private building since its raising and has been at the present location (Rev. Tanquist Road), since May 1980.
The NCC in the north east is privileged to be commanded by Brigadier B.S. Sambyal, SM as he is highly decorated soldier, of the elite special forces of the Indian Armed Forces.
Brigadier B.S. Sambyal said there are 89,000 NCC cadets in the north eastern states.
