Wokha, September 28 (MExN): Governor of Nagaland Ajay Kumar Bhalla commenced a two-day official visit to Wokha district on September 27, marked by a series of engagements to review developmental initiatives and interact with key stakeholders.

Upon arrival, the Governor was received at the Assam Rifles Camp, Wokha, where he was accorded a Guard of Honour and met with district officials. On the way to Doyang, he made a brief visit to Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Wokha, reflecting his interest in educational institutions and youth development.

At Doyang, the Governor visited the Doyang Hydroelectric Power Station and held a meeting with officials of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO). The programme was chaired by Head of Project John Zeliang and featured a presentation by Senior Manager (Civil) Zachamo Ovung. The presentation outlined the inception and historical significance of the Doyang Hydroelectric Dam and highlighted key initiatives undertaken by NEEPCO in areas such as infrastructure development, community outreach, funding mechanisms and regional connectivity.

Governor Bhalla commended the NEEPCO team for their dedicated service and contribution to the state’s energy sector. He lauded their efforts in enhancing operational efficiency, fostering sustainable development and ensuring reliable power supply to the region. He stated that such institutions play a vital role in driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for citizens.

The Governor was accompanied by the First Lady of Nagaland Jyoti Grover Bhalla, Deputy Commissioner Wokha Vineet Kumar IAS, Superintendent of Police Wokha T. Relo Aye and other senior officials. He is scheduled to stay overnight at Doyang and will continue site visits and scenic reviews of the dam and surrounding areas the following day.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, a seasoned civil servant and administrator, was appointed as the Governor of Nagaland in August 2025 following the sudden demise of his predecessor La Ganesan. Prior to this, Bhalla served as the Governor of Manipur and had an extensive career in the Indian Administrative Service, including his tenure as Union Home Secretary. His appointment to Nagaland, in addition to his existing responsibilities, ensures continuity and stability in the state’s governance during a sensitive period. Known for his administrative acumen and commitment to public service, Governor Bhalla has expressed a deep sense of duty towards the welfare and progress of Nagaland, emphasising collaboration with the state government and local communities to foster peace, development and prosperity.

The Doyang Hydroelectric Project, operated by NEEPCO, is a significant power generation facility located in Wokha district. Commissioned in 2000, the project harnesses the waters of the Doyang River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, and has an installed capacity of 75 megawatts, generated through three units of 25 megawatts each. As the only major hydroelectric dam in Nagaland, the Doyang project plays a crucial role in meeting the state’s energy needs by supplying reliable and sustainable power. Beyond electricity generation, the project has contributed to regional development through infrastructure improvements and employment opportunities. NEEPCO’s stewardship of the dam includes ongoing efforts to maintain operational efficiency and support the socio-economic growth of Nagaland, reinforcing the project’s importance as a pillar of the state’s energy security and development strategy.
