
Kohima | August 5 : Normal function of banks has been affected in Nagaland today as all nationalized bank including Nagaland Rural Bank and Nagaland State Cooperative Bank with all other private banks in the state joined All India Bank strike.
In the state capital, around 30 bank employees gathered at the Kohima SBI main branch, where the demands of United Forum of Bank’s Union (UFBU) was read out, urging for fulfillment of their demands.
In Dimapur, the employees staged demonstration in front of SBI Regional Office.
UFBU’s Nagaland general secretary A. Lolly Moses said the strike was peaceful and total in the state. Clearing house and foreign exchanger come almost halted.
Some of the demands of the bank employees includes; Do not privatize Public Sector Banks (PSB) or reduce Government's equity in them; Do not issue licence to industrial houses to start their own banks; Do not avail World Bank loan to capitalize PSB; Do not proceed with the merger of banks; Do not allow unrestricted entry of foreign capital in banking sector.
They also demanded adequate staff in banks through recruitments and stopping violation of working hours; Improvement in pension scheme on the lines of Central Govt. Scheme; Scrapping of Khandelwal Committee recommendations; Settling the demands of employees/officers of Rural Regional Banks and Co-operative Banks and of the Daily Deposit Collectors and so on.
The Forum also urged for strengthening PSBs by opening more rural branches and banning of outsourcing permanent banking jobs and normal banking services, among others.
Meanwhile, the UFBU will meet on August 10 at Bangalore to decide further course of action.
Source said UFBU represents nearly 10 lakh bank employees and officers working in public sector banks, private banks, foreign banks, regional, rural and co-operative banks.
