Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on Thursday hosted a cultural programme and official dinner at Lok Bhavan, Kohima, in honour of the delegates attending the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Athletics Federation of India.
Welcoming the delegates, the Governor described the occasion as historic, noting that it is the first time a National Sports Federation’s AGM is being held in Nagaland. He termed it a significant milestone in the State’s sporting journey and a reflection of inclusiveness and national integration.
The Governor expressed appreciation to the Athletics Federation of India for bringing this prestigious event to the State and acknowledged the leadership of Lalit Kumar Bhanot for his contributions to the development of athletics in the country and the South Asian region.
He also commended Nagaland Athletics under the leadership of Abu Metha for their dedicated efforts in promoting sports in the State, highlighting the successful hosting of the South Asian Cross-Country Championships and the present AGM as major achievements.
Emphasizing the immense sporting potential of Nagaland and the Northeast, the Governor stated that the region’s youth have consistently demonstrated talent, discipline, and resilience. He expressed confidence that with enhanced support and opportunities, they can achieve greater success at national and international levels.
The Governor further expressed hope that the deliberations of the AGM would lead to meaningful outcomes for the growth of athletics, particularly in emerging regions like the Northeast. He also encouraged other sports federations to adopt similar inclusive approaches.
Describing the occasion as a “red-letter day” for Nagaland, he conveyed pride in hosting the delegates and extended his best wishes for the success of the AGM.
‘India is rapidly emerging as a global power in athletics’
Nagaland Athletics Association President Abu Metha thanked Governor for hosting the AGM delegates of AFI at Lok Bhavan.
He stated that the AGM serves as a vital platform to deliberate on key issues concerning sports administration, athlete development and the overall upliftment of sports in the country. Emphasizing that sports possess the transformative power to uplift individuals and communities, he also noted the presence of delegates from Athletics Federations across the nation and welcomed them to Nagaland.
He said that the meeting aims to strategize the future roadmap of athletics in India while also reflecting the spirit of national integration and unity. He further highlighted that athletes from Nagaland have performed commendably at the national level and that the Nagaland Athletics Association continues to nurture young talent at the grassroots.
He concluded by observing that India is rapidly emerging as a global power in Athletics.
The programme was chaired by Director of Youth Resources & Sports, Kethosituo Sekhose while the closing remarks was given by Thavaseelan K, Commissioner & Secretary to Governor.
The event featured cultural presentations by North East Zone Cultural Centre, showcasing the rich traditions of the region.
