Kohima, June 18 (MExN): The Nagaland Government has postponed the observance of the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 in schools across the State from June 21 to June 22 following concerns raised from various quarters over conducting the event on a Sunday.
According to an official communication issued by the School Education Department on June 18, the observance of IDY has been rescheduled to Monday, June 22, in view of June 21 falling on a Sunday.
The directive was issued with the approval of the Chief Secretary, Government of Nagaland.
The decision comes two days after the Directorate of School Education had directed all District Education Officers (DEOs), Senior Sub-Divisional Education Officers (Sr SDEOs) and Sub-Divisional Education Officers (SDEOs) to ensure the nationwide observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga on June 21 in all government and private schools under their respective jurisdictions.
The earlier circular had instructed district education authorities to disseminate information on the event, conduct yoga sessions, ensure maximum participation of students and staff, and submit action-taken reports along with GPS-tagged photographs to the Ministry on the same day.
The revised order has directed the Directorate of School Education to issue necessary instructions to all educational institutions for observance of the programme on June 22 instead.
The postponement follows widespread concern and objections voiced by various organisations, students’ unions, church bodies, and individuals over the conduct of the programme on a Sunday, a day observed by Christians across the State for worship and religious activities.
