Wokha, November 3 (MExN): In a renewed effort to safeguard the globally significant congregation of Amur Falcons, the Wokha district administration has declared a temporary ‘Silence Zone’ around the Pangti roosting site.
The order, issued by Additional Deputy Commissioner Renbomo Ezung reiterated Nagaland’s recognition as the “Falcon Capital of the World,” owing what was described as the largest annual gathering of Amur Falcons at Pangti Village during October and November.
To minimise disturbances, the roosting site at Pangti has been officially declared a temporary 'Silence Zone' within a 3-kilometre radius for the duration of the migration season, it said.
Scientific studies have shown that high-intensity sound can induce fear in wild birds, potentially causing them to abandon their habitat and disrupting vital communication linked to reproduction and survival, it added.
As per the State DIPR, the order also cited a 2013 directive from the Office of the Chief Secretary, Nagaland, stating that government grants and assistance to villages involved in harming Amur Falcons may be reviewed or curtailed.
Accordingly, the district administration has prohibited all activities that could disturb the birds at the roosting site or elsewhere in Wokha during the migration season.
It further urged all citizens, communities, and visitors to cooperate in preserving this unique ecological phenomenon and to uphold Nagaland’s global reputation for successful wildlife conservation.
