Imphal | August 18 : Amid the ongoing agitation sponsored by Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) along the two national highways leading to the state capital Imphal demanding for the creation of Sadar Hills district, the Naga frontal organisations in Manipur are pulling up their loins to confront any move from the state government of Manipur from succumbing to the pressure of the SHDDC. Supply lines to the state capital Imphal have been choked since August 1 and as a result the people are beginning to feel the heat of the agitation.
In the midst of this imbroglio, the Naga frontal organisations are all set to hold rallies in the district and sub-divisional headquarters of Tamenglong, Senapati, Chandel and Ukhrul districts on August 19 against any move of the state government in creating Sadar Hills district. Sadar Hills is currently under Senapati district and the Naga organisations want that the district should not be bifurcated.
On Friday, rallies will be held simultaneously in the districts of Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul and Chandel. In Tamenglong district, the Zeliangrong Baudi (ZB) will organise the rallies while in Senapati district, the programme will be held under the aegis of Naga People's Organisation (NPO). In Ukhrul district, the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) will sponsored the programme and in Chandel district, the Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO) will take charge of the programme.
It is still not clear, what mode of agitation will be initiated by the Naga frontal organisations after the Friday rallies. It is worth noting that the economic blockade that was imposed by SHDDC beginning midnight of July 31, tentatively for seven days, quickly turned into an indefinite general strike across Sadar Hills, barely two days after the blockade began, following the death of three women in a blockade related incident.
Since the beginning of the agitation, the state government invited the striking party for two separate rounds of talks but the parleys failed to hammer out any solution to the vexed issue. Mediators of SHDDC, including MLAs and members of Sadar Hills ADC, have been camping at New Delhi issue since August 13, seeking appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Some people have also been killed in a strike related incidents so far and a dozen vehicles razed by the agitators. The state has been completely cut off from the rest of the country via National Highways 39 and 53, which are the arterial transit conduits for sustenance in the state.
Significantly, given the wretched consequence of inflation generated by the agitation, the state government, a few days ago, issued a stern ultimatum to SHDDC to lift blockade imposed on both the highways before August 15 or face a merciless crackdown by security forces. The no-nonsense Ibobi led government has time and again given out a strong message that it will not be cowed down by agitators trying to have their way without regards to public goods.

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 18 (MExN): The Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) strongly reaffirmed its stance against any bifurcation of Naga’s land especially in Senapati District in the backdrop of vocal demand for creation of Sadar Hills Districthood. “Any means or attempt of dishonoring the historical domain of the Nagas and its ownership over its land will only destabilize and disintegrate the communal co-existence of different diversified groups in Manipur. And that, any eventualities arising out of the present sensitive issue, the present SPF led O.Ibobi Singh State Government will be solely responsible”, stated a press note issued by A. Pfokrehrii Khrasi President, SDSA.
It stated that with “human patience already drained out inspite of repeated attempts and appeals to consider humanitarian issues especially on NH-39”, the SDSA expressed regret that, the State Government’s policy of discriminations and repression must end immediately. “For which, the SDSA has hereby informed with much pain through this Press Note to all the stranded trucks and vehicles along the NH-39 in Senapati District to immediately vacate/clear within 24 hours time, failing which, the SDSA will not be responsible for any untoward consequences”.
Expressing strong resentment over the repeated failure of the State Government to facilitate even emergency medical services, student’s issues, stranded trucks and vehicles, the SDSA has been compelled to react. Taking these necessary steps as a concrete measures to seek the attention of the concerned, the SDSA will intensify its agitation, in case the State Government continuous to remain a mere spectator and turn blind eye on the Nagas concern.
