A two-day national workshop on Elderly Issues, organised by the Department of Sociology, Nagaland University, Hqrs: Lumami, concluded on October 16.
Dr. Yamsani Srikanth chaired the valedictory session, and in his introductory remarks, highlighted the importance of such academic forums in bridging research and policy, emphasising that ageing should be viewed within the broader framework of social inclusion and dignity.
Dr. Pitheli K. Jimo provided a summary of the two-day workshop, highlighting key themes such as the interdisciplinary healthcare challenges for the elderly, expert insights on research and policy, and the importance of community-based, sustainable elder care. She noted that the workshop fostered rich discussions and collaboration among scholars, practitioners, and students focused on ageing issues.
A special number was presented by Repa Tzudir, a research scholar. Prof. Kilangla Jamir, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Nagaland University, delivered an address on issues facing the elderly. She emphasised the growing importance of gerontological studies in India amid demographic shifts and a rising elderly population.
Prof. Jamir highlighted the role of academic institutions in raising awareness of older adults' experiences and advocated for policy interventions to address their challenges. She encouraged participants to engage with the elderly community through research and advocacy.
The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks from Dr. Suraj Beri, who expressed gratitude to the resource persons, participants, and the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) for their active involvement and support for the national workshop.
