Dimapur, September 24 (MExN): A one-day national e-seminar on the theme “Redefining the Fourth Trimester: The Nursing Role in Reducing Postpartum Complications” was organised by the Faculty of Nursing, North East Christian University (NECU), Dimapur.
The seminar resource persons included Prof (Dr) Christy Simpson, Ph.D. OBGN, Adjunct Faculty, CIHSR, Chümoukedima, Nagaland, Prof Anju A Thomas, M.Sc. OBGN, Dhanwantari Nursing College, Bangalore, Karnataka and Zulanbeni C Kithan, M.Sc. OBGN, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Nursing, Assam Down Town University, Guwahati, Assam.
NECU in its press release stated that the seminar focused on enhancing participants’ knowledge and strengthening the role of nurses in the early recognition, prevention, and management of postpartum complications. A total of 300 delegates attended the e-seminar.
The seminar emphasised the importance of early recognition and timely management of life-threatening postpartum complications. Sessions were also focused on the recognition, prevention, and nursing management of common postpartum infectious and thromboembolic complications, including endometritis, mastitis, caesarean/perineal surgical-site infections, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), and Pulmonary Embolism (PE). Emphasis was placed on risk assessment, early recognition of clinical warning signs, preventive measures, and appropriate prophylactic nursing care, it stated.
The importance of early identification of psychological disturbances during the postpartum period, particularly postnatal baby blues, postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis. ACOG/AWHONN postpartum transition models, cultural competence, therapeutic communication, structured discharge planning and empowering mothers and families with the knowledge and skills required identifying and responding appropriately to urgent maternal warning signs were highlighted.
