Aizawl | September 6
North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP), a conglomerate of indigenous organisations and student bodies, on Friday reaffirmed to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) and "illegal influx" from neighboring countries.
The forum held its first federal assembly from Wednesday at hotel Sangchhia in Aizawl, which concluded on September 6 after passing several resolutions.
Sources from the forum said that the federal assembly resolved to oppose the CAB and any legislation related to it and "influx of illegal immigrants".
The NEFIP supported the demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit  (ILP) by the Northeastern states and appealed to all the state governments to implement NRC like legislation in the region.
The NEFIP then resolved to make massive efforts to ensure that the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) is implemented in letter and spirit in all the Northeastern states.
Initiated by Manipur People against Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 (MANPAC), the NEFIP was formed recently with the urgent call to oppose the CAB passed by the Lok Sabha in December last year.
The forum held its first NE people’s conference between April 1 and 3 this year in Imphal.
After series of meetings at various NE member states, the forum held its first federal assembly in Aizawl during which central executive council was formed and elected office bearers.
The federal assembly was attended by representatives from member states- MANPAC, Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisation (COMSO), Assam League of Aborigine Rights Movement (ALARM), United Arunachal Indigenous People’s Forum (UAIPF),  Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI), Tripura Social Organisation Solidarity (TSOS) and Mizo Students’ Union (MSU).
