Guwahati, September 8 (MExN): The North Eastern Regional Institute of Management (NERIM) Group of Institutions tributes to Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his birth centenary, celebrating the multifaceted legacy of the cultural icon.
The ceremony commenced with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp by Dr Priyanka Sarmah, a promoter of NERIM, and the institute's Registrar, Deba Prasad Misra.
In his address, Registrar Misra highlighted that while Hazarika is universally revered as a singer, his profound contributions as a filmmaker and journalist are often overlooked. He noted that Hazarika's work, which transcended musical boundaries, earned him a seat in the Assam Legislative Assembly in 1967 and the presidency of the Assam Sahitya Sabha in 1993.
Speakers at the event eulogised Hazarika as a ‘multi-faceted genius and a true humanitarian,’ whose songs resonated across all sections of society by focusing on universal themes of humanity, social justice, and harmony.
The gathering recalled the numerous national accolades bestowed upon the bard, including the Bharat Ratna (2019, Posthumous), the Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1992), the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Shri, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
The event featured musical tributes by faculty members, the administrative officer, and students, who rendered several of Hazarika's timeless classics, captivating the audience.
