Maligaon, August 7 (MExN): General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), Chetan Kumar Srivastava on Thursday inspected the proposed site for a Wagon Periodic Overhauling (POH) Workshop at Basbari in Kokrajhar district of Assam.
The proposed workshop, under Alipurduar Division, is planned with a total capacity of 250 wagons per month, with Phase I targeting 75 wagons per month, NFR said in a statement.
Srivastava was accompanied by Uttam Hajowary, Chairman of the T.C.L.C.C, Bodoland Territorial Council, and senior railway officials during the visit.
The project, estimated at Rs 256.35 crore for Phase I, is expected to generate employment opportunities, promote skill development, boost local allied industries and contribute to transforming the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) into a logistics and industrial hub in the Northeast.
Spread over approximately 2,500 bighas, the Basbari workshop is strategically located 1 km from Basbari station and 17 km from Rupsi Airport, ensuring strong multimodal connectivity, the statement said.
Highlighting the significance of the project, Srivastava said it will address the anticipated increase in freight traffic driven by ongoing rail infrastructure projects including new lines, doubling and multimodal developments.
The workshop will be equipped with modern facilities such as stripping, body repair, painting, ancillary works and quality control units, with a phased scale-up to full capacity, he added.
As per the staetment, the GM also stressed timely completion of infrastructure projects with focus on safety, quality and sustainability, underscoring NFR’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure to meet growing regional demand for passenger and freight services.
