Maligaon, July 29 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has initiated a survey for the implementation of an Integrated Garbage Treatment System at Maligaon and Pandu Railway Colonies under the Lumding Division, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG).

The initiative is significant step towards enhancing environmental sustainability and promoting scientific waste management practices, stated an official press release, adding that it followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between NFR and IITG.

Under the agreement, IITG will provide technical consultancy and conduct field studies to assess the feasibility, design, and execution strategy for the proposed system.

Following the survey, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be submitted to NFR outlining the required infrastructure, estimated costs, treatment methods, and implementation timelines, added the press release from the CPRO NFR.

The proposed system will focus on waste segregation at source, scientific disposal of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, composting, and recycling, in alignment with Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines and national waste management protocols, it said.

According to NFR, the initiative is expected to improve cleanliness, hygiene, and overall living conditions for railway employees and their families residing in these colonies.

It also aims to reduce the environmental impact of railway operations and promote a zero-waste colony model.

The project reflects its continued commitment to sustainable practices, infrastructural development, and quality of life enhancement for employees and nearby communities, it added.
