Maligaon, July 29 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has made significant strides in enhancing the safety and comfort of train travel by prioritizing track maintenance and safety works. During the financial year 2024-25, NFR has surpassed several safety targets set by the Railway Board, marking considerable progress in track safety.
In June 2024 alone, NFR completed the renewal of 26.38 kilometers of track, bringing the cumulative total to 69.65 kilometers from April to June 2024. This marks a 59.77% increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, 23.69 Track Kilometers (TKM) of thorough sleeper renewals were completed in June, totaling 71.75 TKM from April to June 2024—an impressive 135.63% increase over the previous year.
NFR also achieved the renewal of 23 equivalent sets of turnouts in June, with a cumulative total of 48.50 equivalent sets from April to June 2024, reflecting a 117.98% increase. The installation of 17 Thick Web Switches (TWS) in June brought the total to 49 TWS from April to June 2024, a staggering 2350% increase over the same period last year.
Furthermore, NFR undertook 28.34 TKM of deep screening (plain track) in June, with a cumulative total of 145.41 TKM from April to June 2024, representing a 156% increase. Additionally, 1132.20 kilometers of track were tested using the Ultra Sonic Flaw Detection (USFD) machine in June, with a total of 5221.60 kilometers tested from April to June 2024. The USFD technique is essential for detecting flaws like cracks and ensuring the timely removal of defective rails for enhanced safety.
NFR’s continuous efforts to maintain railway tracks in optimal condition, including the replacement of worn-out tracks, turnouts, damaged sleepers, and deep screening with ballasting, aim to provide a safe and secure journey for passengers with improved comfort, a press release from the NFR stated.
