NGBF directs withdrawal of Kiphire GBs Union letter

DIMAPUR, JUNE 4 (MExN): The Nagaland Gaon Buras Federation (NGBF) has directed the Kiphire Town GBs Union to immediately withdraw a letter relating to the collection of annual employment tax for “underground groups,” stating that such activities do not fall within the recognised roles and responsibilities of the institution of Gaon Buras.

In a statement issued through its Media Cell, the NGBF clarified its position regarding a letter circulated by the Kiphire Town GBs Union on June.

The Federation stated that after seeking clarification, the Kiphire Town GBs Union informed it that the initiative had reportedly been undertaken at the instance of certain groups of people with the bona fide intention of maintaining peace and social harmony in the area.

While taking note of the intention behind the initiative, the NGBF maintained that “such activities do not fall within the recognised role and responsibilities of the institution of the Gaon Buras.”

The Federation said it has consistently advised all GBs and their federating units to refrain from involvement in matters that may compromise or adversely affect the image, dignity and integrity of the institution.

“Accordingly, the Federation hereby directs the Kiphire Town GBs Union to immediately withdraw the said letter relating to the collection of such taxes,” it stated.

The NGBF also highlighted the historical role played by Gaon Buras in the Naga political movement, stating that since its inception, Gaon Buras have consistently made sacrifices for the cause “physically, morally, and materially.”

“Even today, both in towns and villages, Gaon Buras continue to endure various forms of pressure and victimization,” the Federation stated. It further noted that while Naga political groups have recognised the role and importance of Gaon Buras and Village Councils, these institutions often remain subjected to persistent pressure and obligations.

The Federation urged all its federating units to remain above such activities and exercise caution in such matters. It advised all units to seek prior guidance and consultation from the Federation before undertaking any initiative that may affect the standing and credibility of the institution.
