NIHESW “Talk Show” on environmental concerns

In commemoration with World Environment Day, the Nagaland Institute of Health, Environment & Social Welfare (NIHESW) today hosted a “Talk Show” on environmental concerns of Nagaland” here at the Zonal Council Hall.

K. Kire from forest department made a clarion call to the people of the state to stop jungle burning and also to discourage the practice of hunting and killing wild animals and birds in the state. He also stressed on the need to minimize the use of firewood.

The talk show with seven panelists from forest department, State Council of Education Research & Training, Kohima Municipal Council, Department of Public Health Engineering, Khonoma Nature Conservation & Tragopan Sanctuary, Angami Youth Organization and Department of Geology Kohima Science College Jotsoma, discussed key environmental issues and threats that the state of Nagaland is currently facing.

The talk show touched on state of forest, deforestation, solid waste management, water supply, environmental education, climate chance, nature conservation and the efforts of Angami Youth Organization on conservation of environment.

A green pledge was also taken by the participants which reads as; “ Use economical travel options, shared mode/public transport, turn off lights, monitors, air conditioning whenever not being used, reduce power consumption by switching to energy saving option like compact florescent bulbs, inkjet printers, TFT panels and energy saving modes, reduce paper usage, print double side, build awareness about environment protection, conservation of resources which is need of the hour and use less plastic, dispose properly for recycling.”

Keynote address was given by Dr. Inakhe Sumi, director NIHESW. The programme was led by Kevitsu Yhome, programme officer, NIHESW while Dr. Seyiekhrielie Whiso and Teisovi Gerard Meyase acted as moderators. Vote of thanks was proposed by Santu Thapa, state coordinator NCSC, NIHESW.
