NLA Speaker, KPC, LCK mourn demise of AS Arthur

Kohima, May 2 (MExN): Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of former Secretary of the Assembly, AS Arthur, who passed away on May 2.

In a condolence message, Longkumer said that late Arthur served the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from 1974 to 1984 with exemplary dedication, integrity, and professionalism.

He stated that Arthur’s tenure was marked by unwavering commitment to the highest traditions of parliamentary democracy, adding that his stewardship significantly strengthened the institutional framework and enhanced the efficiency and dignity of the House.

Describing his demise as a great loss, the Speaker said that the state has lost a distinguished administrator and a guiding presence whose contributions will be cherished and remembered.

Longkumer conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that the Almighty grant them strength to bear the irreparable loss.

KPC: The Kohima Press Club has expressed deep sadness over the passing of A S Arthur, a respected senior political figure from Manipur and the father of its member, Yirmiyan Arthur Yhome, who passed away at the age of 99. In a statement, the KPC has extended its deepest sympathies, and prays that God would grant peace and comfort during this incredibly difficult time.

LCK: The Lions Club of Kohima has also expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of AS Arthur. In a statement, the LCK stated that Late Arthur was the Charter President of the Lions Club of Kohima when it was established in 1978, serving its first year in 1979–80. He continued his leadership in the subsequent year, 1980–81, again serving as President of the Club.

It also informed that he played a pioneering role in laying the foundation of Lionism in the State capital and dedicated himself wholeheartedly to its growth. The Club stated that his vision and commitment enabled it to sustain its activities and service to humanity over the years.

Arthur was also associated with public service. He later entered politics in Manipur and was elected as MLA from Ukhrul in 1984. In 1994, he served as Minister for Forest and Environment and General Administration. Earlier, he had served as Special Secretary in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. He is also the father of Alfred Kanngam Arthur.

Describing his demise as a great loss, the Club said that society has lost a visionary leader and committed humanitarian whose contributions will always be remembered.

The Lions Club of Kohima conveyed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for strength and comfort for them during this time of grief.
