Dimapur, February 25 (MExN): The Nagaland Medical Students' Association (NMSA) has expressed anguish and unequivocally condemned an incident of alleged racial discrimination and sexual assault against a Naga doctor, a third-year postgraduate resident in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at AIIMS Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, on February 23.
In a statement released here, the NMSA said the victim was subjected to racial abuse and sexual violence, leaving her with severe physical and emotional trauma. The association described the act against the young woman doctor, who was pursuing advanced medical training, as “profoundly disturbing and wholly unacceptable.”
The NMSA asserted that the incident is not isolated but reflects a “disturbing and growing pattern of racial discrimination, harassment, and violence” faced by individuals from the North Eastern region across the country. It noted that recurrent reports of racial slurs, profiling, and violence have fostered an atmosphere of fear among students and professionals residing far from home.
Demanding zero tolerance, the association called for the “strictest punishment” for those involved. While acknowledging the prompt action by police in arresting two of the three accused, the NMSA expressed grave concern that the principal perpetrator reportedly remains at large. It warned that the failure to secure the arrest of all accused delays justice and undermines public confidence.
The NMSA appealed to the Government of Nagaland to take up the matter at the highest level with the Uttar Pradesh government and central authorities. It urged “coordinated, time-bound, and decisive action” for the immediate apprehension of all accused and the swift completion of the investigation and prosecution.
The association also appealed for legal, institutional, and moral support for the victim so she may pursue justice without fear while being far from home. It further called upon governments and law enforcement agencies to take sustained measures to address racial prejudice and ensure a safe environment for all citizens.
The NMSA expressed unwavering solidarity with the victim and all individuals from the North East facing discrimination, trusting that authorities will act with urgency to deliver “swift and exemplary justice.”
