Kohima | July 22 : In the wake of criticism by a certain Naga political group, the state government today announced that, henceforth, the Nagaland Police will not provide security escorts to factional leaders unless the state government is specifically directed by the Government of India with specific purpose, location and occasion. At an interaction with the Kohima press fraternity at his official chambers today, state Home Minister Imkong L. Imchen said the decision was arrived at today during a high-level meeting of the state government which was attended by among others, the Nagaland DGP, Home Commissioner, Staff Officer to CFMG Chairman, etc, at his chamber.
Earlier the Nagaland Police was providing security escorts to top underground leaders under requisition of the CFMG Chairman, the Home Minister revealed. However, this will discontinue unless directed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Imchen said.
Meanwhile, reacting to the rape and murder incident at Kirha Village, Dimapur yesterday, the Home Minister described the incident as very painful and frustrating and assured that the state government is pursuing the case. Describing the crime as most dastardly and inconceivable evil, he said such heinous crimes were unheard of in Naga tradition and urged the Naga intellectuals to make a thorough study of the psychological thoughts of the modern day Nagas and try to find out what has gone wrong with our mindsets and whether anything is seriously wrong with the Nagas.
Assuring that the state government is aware of the spate of rapes and murders throughout the state, he assured that the government is pursuing the cases and is doing its best to trace the culprits through its agencies and bring them to book.
