NPCC reject ‘eye wash’ statement on women quota

Dimapur, August 16 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee has rejected the “eye wash” statement of Naga People’s Front (NPF) President that instead of allowing the womenfolk to face election, he said ‘the government has a ‘better plan’ in regard to 33% women reservation.” The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) also rejected the comment for the reason that his comments were not reflective of the Cabinet or the government’s policy.
“Dr. Shurhozelie Mr. Shürhozelie’s comment is the policy of the Neiphiu Rio’s NPF and his coterie which includes Mr Shürhozelie among others. It does not reflect the policy of the cabinet nor does it reflect the Government. The issue being dragged in the court by the Naga Mothers’ Association only serves this personalize policy since it has become an excuse for people like Rio and Shürhozelie to delay the implementation of the Act thereby depriving the constitutional rights of our women folk and God knows when the court shall be giving its final ruling and in whose favor,” the NPCC said in a statement today. NPCC president SI Jamir appended the statement.
The statement of the Minister for Urban Development and Higher Education is a mockery and “an excuse for failing to implement the Nagaland Municipal and Town Council Act so far,” the Congress said.
The minister’s comment that the government has a “better plan” in regard to 33% women reservation in the civic bodies “that instead of allowing the womenfolk to face election, the NPF led Government was proposing to nominate 33% of women is only to eye wash the people on the failure of the Government for implementing the 33% Women Reservation Act.”
The Congress reminded of the fact that the Act being passed in the Parliament means it is mandatory for every state government to implement the same for which the Nagaland Legislative Assembly accordingly passed the Bill.
“However, owing to the negative electoral calculation for the NPF-led government, the Act have not been implemented till now. His comment that the Government is contemplating to amend the act is too childish because without implementing the Act, how can the government possibly be contemplating to amend the same Act that was pass by it not so long ago?” the Congress queried in wonder.
“If it cannot be implemented, why passed it in the Assembly in the first place. No political party can play hide and seek policy because no political party can take the people for granted for its selfish and whimsical interest only nor can the Government of the day hijack the people for its eye only for self aggrandizement,” the NPCC added.
