Dimapur, August 24 (MExN): The Naga People’s Organization (NPO) advises the Manipur government including the opposition parties to “exercise extreme caution” in dealing the issue of the demand for creation of a “Sadar Hills district.” The caution from the NPO comes in the wake of increased tensions in Manipur over the demand for dividing Senapati district.
“Any political parties cannot take advantage of the issue for their vested political mileage; rather focus on collective and coherent resolution to the conflict which is inflicting the harmony of the state,” the NPC stated in a press release today. “Worsening the issue, the recent provocative judgment as stated by MPP, NCP, CPI-M, BJP and others without acknowledging the historical facts and sentiments of the Nagas will only continue to damage the communal serenity in the State.”
The NPO appeals to the political leaders and parties in the Manipur assembly to “maintain extreme sincerity in representing the issue rather than politicizing the issue for elections gains.” The opposition parties must speak out against any divisive role of the ruling government’s policies to victimize and suppress the historical right of a particular community at the expense of another, the organizations stated. “The NPO is extremely resented and opposed over the proposed Cabinet decision to form a committee on reorganization of administration and police district boundary. While appreciation the idea to streamline the administrative system in the state, such decision to create artificial boundaries is only an attempt to give away Naga’s right over its ancestral land. Therefore, creating administrative boundaries is as good as bifurcating and direct creation of another district from its parental boundary,” the NPO stated.
Any “illogical and prejudice conclusion of the issue” during the coming Manipur assembly would only escalate the present volatile situation rather than finding solutions, the organization said. The NPO condemns the “communal agendas of the O.Ibobi Singh state government to instigate litigious issue between the Nagas and other communities of Manipur”.
