Organisations denounce abduction of engineer

Tensions are high in Ukhrul following the abduction of engineer Wungshim Kasar, 59, of Sarkaphung village under Litan police station who was abducted from Ukhrul by suspected Kuki militants on the midnight of August 21. The whereabouts of the officer remains unknown till date.
The Tangkhul Council assembly has condemned the abduction. A communiqué from the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) today appealed to the abductors to release Wungshim immediately and unharmed. The official is attached as Surveyor of Works in the PWD, government of Manipur presently.
The council’s assembly also opposed any move to carve out any inch of the Nagas’ land against the will and rights of the Nagas. The assembly has reaffirmed full support to the stand of the United Naga Council, All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur and Naga Students’ Federation’s joint memorandum signed four times with the Government of Manipur during 1981, 1982, 1984 and 1986 on the issue about the demarcation of the Nagas’ ancestral land areas.
It was also informed that the southern Tangkhul councils and students’ unions, Tangkhul Aze Longphang and Tangkhul Aze Katamnao Long along with the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Mapithal range area comprising of more than 20 villages have condemned the abduction. They have urged the abductors to release the victim safely.
Speaking to this correspondent, when asked what steps have been initiated by the district administration following the crime, Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, R. Sudhan said necessary government actions are being initiated. The DC said an FIR has been lodged with the police. The Assam Riffles are also trying to trace the abducted officer, it was informed.
